Rugby legends in town for the big dinner this May

It’s that time of the year again when KL rolls out the red carpets for rugby royalty as they touch down for the BMCC Annual Charity Rugby Dinner. Now in its 13th year, the dinner has become the British Chamber of Commerce’s signature event, raising proceeds for a noble cause and this year those proceeds will once again go to the National Cancer Society Malaysia.

A highly anticipated date for rugby enthusiasts in Malaysia, the occasion brings to the capital some of the game’s legends, who not only attend the dinner to entertain guests and give speeches on their experiences competing at the highest level of the game, but also host a rugby coaching clinic on the morning before the dinner.

This year, in celebration of the 2017 British & Irish Lions Tour in New Zealand – a touring tradition that dates back to 1888 – the dinner will see two capped Lions, and an All Blacks star as the guests of honour.

Fergus Slattery graces the guest list, a former Irish rugby union player and captain of the most successful Irish touring side ever in 1979. Slattery was also a member of the Irish Triple Crown-winning team in 1982 and was inducted into the International Rugby Hall of Fame in 2007.

Joining him is Peter Winterbottom, England’s most-capped (appearances at an international level) openside player till 2003. Winterbottom was selected for two British and Irish Lions tours in 1983 and 1993, and is famous for his hard tackling and courage.

Finally, the New Zealand All Black’s 54th Test Captain Justin Marshall rounds out the list, a man who has seen more than 81 caps and now serves as s Sky Sports commentator in New Zealand for All Blacks games and other provincial level matches.

Back to once again liven up the proceedings and lead the auction is sports television personality, professional speaker and former Australian rugby union player Justin “Sambo” Sampson. Among his many roles, Sampson has been an ESPN Star Sports presenter and commentator for eight years, and has been hosting the dinner since its inception.
